‘Servant of Christ’ by name and minister of Christ by nature the Reverend James Gilchrist was ordained as minister of the parish of New Cumnock in March 1697. He served the parish for four years before moving on to the parish of Dunscore. Dumfriesshire. The Reverend Gilcrhist was deprived of that charge in 1716 “for irregular and schismatic courses”, despite the support of his parishioners.
