Welcome to the Bridges of New Cumnock
The village of New Cumnock nestles at the confluence of the River Nith and the Afton Water both of which rise in the uplands of the parish. The place-name Cumnock may well have its origins in the meeting of these two rivers from Gaelic comunn achadh ‘the meeting place’.
Both the River Nith and Afton Water and their multitude of tributaries are crossed courtesy of bridges , fords and the occasional set of stepping stones.
