Origins of the Place-Names of New Cumnock

The lands of the parish of New Cumnock sit strategically at the head of Nithsdale in the Southern Uplands a natural gateway to Ayrshire from the south. The Ancient Britons, Gaels, Angles, Scandinavian and Scots have all settled here leaving their signatures on the place-names of this large upland parish.
