Colonel the Hon. Frederick McAdam Cathcart of Craigengillan
Residence: Craigengillan House, Dalmellington
In the 1803 Land Tax Rolls Quintin McAdam Esquire of Craigengillan (Dalmellington) is recorded as the proprietor of the lands of Lanemark (Marquis of Bute Superior), Beochs and Lochmaharb the latter lying in the south of the parish on the banks of Pochriegavin Burn which forms the boundary with the parish of Carsphairn, Kirkcudbrightshire. His father John McAdam was an acquaintance to Robert Burns and of Quintin , Burns wrote “An’ Quinton – o’ lads no the worst!“
Quintin died in 1805 in tragic circumstances taking his own life in the McAdam’s Craigengillan mansion. Control of the estate fell to his daughter Jean McAdam and she later married Col. Frederick Cathcart. He changed his name to McAdam-Cathcart to satisfy the Trust of John McAdam of Craigengillan requiring the title to be held by a person named McAdam. He was a diplomat, soldier and created Knight of the Russian Order of St.Anne.
